Seoul: where Korea’s past and present meet

A practical introduction to the palaces, neighborhoods, river parks, food and mountain views that shape the Korean capital.

Travel Korea city story

Seoul rewards travelers who look beyond a checklist. The capital is a city of royal gates and glass towers, quiet mountain paths and late-night shopping streets. Its historic center remains readable in the layout of palaces, shrines and old neighborhoods, while districts such as Seongsu, Hongdae and Yeouido show how quickly the city reinvents itself.

Begin with the historic center

Gyeongbokgung is the most familiar starting point for the Joseon-era capital. From there, the walk toward Bukchon, Samcheong-dong and Insadong connects palace architecture with hanok lanes, galleries, crafts and tea houses. Changdeokgung and Jongmyo offer a different atmosphere: greener, quieter and closely tied to the ritual life of the dynasty.

These areas are best explored on foot, but they are lived-in neighborhoods rather than a theme park. Keep voices low near homes, respect photography notices and avoid blocking narrow alleys.

See the city by neighborhood

Myeongdong is convenient for first-time visitors and sits between the historic center and Namsan. Euljiro mixes old workshops with small bars and cafés. Hongdae and Yeonnam are known for youth culture, music and busy evenings, while Seongsu combines industrial buildings, design shops and pop-up spaces. South of the river, Gangnam offers large-scale shopping and contemporary business districts.

Make time for the Hangang

The Hangang River live camera shows one of the riverside areas that gives Seoul breathing room. Its parks are places for cycling, picnics, evening walks and seasonal events. Yeouido, Banpo and Ttukseom each have a different setting, so choose the park that fits the rest of your route rather than crossing the city only for a photograph.

Use the mountains to understand Seoul

Seoul is ringed and interrupted by mountains. Bukhansan offers serious hiking, Inwangsan rises close to the old city wall, and Namsan provides the easiest central overview. A visit to Namsan works particularly well near sunset, when the city’s geography becomes clear and the lights begin to spread across both sides of the river.

Eating well

Markets and neighborhood restaurants are often more memorable than a rigid list of famous dishes. Try a traditional market for snacks and everyday meals, then seek regional specialties in areas where office workers and residents actually eat. If you have allergies or dietary restrictions, carry a clearly translated explanation; broths, sauces and side dishes may contain ingredients that are not obvious.

A sensible first visit

For a short stay, organize each day geographically. Pair the palaces with Insadong and Bukchon, connect Myeongdong with Namsan, and give a separate day to the Hangang or neighborhoods south of the river. Seoul’s subway is extensive, but repeated cross-city trips consume more time than the map suggests.

Before you go

Seoul is not one experience but a collection of layers. The most satisfying visit combines one major landmark with the ordinary streets, parks and meals around it.
